Lonneke Engel, finally, done this painting…

This last leg of the making of this paintng was more straithforward, except for changes in the face, or faces and a bit of taking off or adding on the sides, but the main composition remained, a lot of trouble with the hands, hands and face are still a chanllenge to me, more than often I won’t emphasize hands, we tend to shy away from things that we not so good at, but sometimes you have to take them on…I find it easier to do in painting than in real life…but this is another story…so back to painting….

Dans cette partie, les méandres de peinture se font moins rares et surtout moins changeant, la difficulté était surtout le dessin du ou des visages, les mains, que je montre peu, on a pas tendance à mettre en valeur nos points faibles…mais parfois faut aussi affronter nos manques…j’ai moins de difficultés à le faire en peinture et dessin que dans le reste de ma vie…mais cela c’est une autre histoire…:) Les changements se faisaient plutôt vers les bords du tableau, mais pas de changements radicaux comme ce tableau en a connus…

Finally, I did got to the point where you tell yourself, ok I think this is it, it is finished, looking at it now, I don’t like the hands, they were better in a previous stage, I guess it will be for the next time,  her or another….

Finalement, tranquillement, j’en suis arrivé à un point où l’on se dit, ‘ok c’est cela, on y est, le seul regret, je pense que ses mains ne sont pas aussi bien qu’à l’ètape précédente…ce sera pour la prochaine…

Parfois on se perd dans un tableau, même si celui ci est petit….:)
Sometimes, even in a small painting, you can and I got lost….:)

I guess I did rush a bit too much things with this painting, I put it in a show of my paintings, held at my place…but afterward I felt it wasn’t finished, too many mistakes were becoming too apparent to me, at least, her head was wrong, her expression I did not like, and many few things made me deciding to work on it again, I once read that Degas entered a museum where one of his painting was hanged, and that he did retouch it, an urban legend or artistic legend? don’t know, but at least in my case I would not have to entered someone else appartment to work on this painting.

Probablement que le fait que j’avais un peu forcé la note pour présenter ce tableau à une exposition que j’avais monté chez moi, mais plus je le regardais et plus je voyais des choses qui ne me plaisait pas…donc évidemment j’ai décidé de le retravailler…heureusement que personne ne l’avait acheté, il m’aurait fallu faire comme Degas a fait, apparemment, et il m’aurait fallu aller chez quelqu’un en cachette pour le peindre, Degas lui était supposément entré dans un musée pour retoucher une de ses toiles, peut-être est-ce une légende urbaine ou artistique…mais je peux comprendre cela…:)

So it has become inevitable that I would rework this painting, and I though that it would be a matter of a few sessions to get it finished….it was without compting on the fact that I would start to play with reproducing either the whole model, faded, or just part of her, this was the first time that I was using this technique, which has become more frequent over the last few years, but I this point I did not have a clear idea of what I did want, I guess it is a recipe for getting in lot of trouble

Toujours est-il qu’il était devenu  clair que je ne pouvais plus le laisser comme cela, je me suis dit qu’il suffirait de quelques sessions pour en finir avec cette toile….sauf que plus que je le travaillais, plus je trouvais qu’il allait nul part ce tableau, alors j’eu la brillante idée d’ajouter des copies du modèle, parfois en reproduisant partiellement seulement la pose, c’était le début d’une technique que j’emploi beaucoup plus fréquemment maintenant, sauf qu’à ce moment-là je n’avais aucune idée de ce que je voulais qu’il devienne ce tableau, recette infaillible pour se donner du trouble….:)

And then everything started going in all directions, models appearing, disapearing, parts were painted then removed, composition changed, zooming here and there, I guess my brushes were too hasty, helped by me of course…so all that was another recipe for disaster, ok not a real disaster, but it kind of force me to put so many hours in this one….and at one point there was four Lonneke…:)

Et là tout c’est mis à bouger, bien sûr sous l’action de mes pinceaux, parfois un peu trop fébrile…même la composition du tableau allait changer radicalement, une autre recette pour un désastre, enfin disons qu’il ne faut pas exagérer…mais du moins une recette qui garantissait que j’allais mettre encore beaucoup d’heures…et dessiner Lonneke 4 fois…:)

And I kept redrawing re painting, and then they were three, sometimes her face became lovely, but I would always found a way to change it and lose it, and regain it….

Puis par la suite j’en effaçais une ou deux….redessinais le visage, puis ne l’aimait plus pour le redessiner de nouveau…

At this point I really though that it was finally getting very close to be signed, so here’s an almost final version, or a first draft or an almost final version…:), and further down here’s the video of that year and a half of painting Lonneke, 1,2,3, or 4 th…

La fin du tableau, était enfin en vue… comme cela s’est produit en quelques occasions avec ce tableau, voici la version finale…à cette date, mais ce ne fut pas une version finale…:) et ensuite le vidéo de cette nouvelle étape

Lonneke, finished? a trick question….

For a start, links to part I and II, maybe you did not read them, or it is kind of hazy…..
Tout d’abord les liens pour les parties I et II si vous ne les avez pas lu ou que vous ne vous en souvenez plus très bien…

From where we were in june 2006, all seems to go relatively smooth, it is not apparent of course that it wasn’t so, first I switch to oil and Liquin, and then I was having lot of problem with the tacky surface of the painting, the long delays between sessions, often many weeks, so dust was adding to the problem, and I had a lot of trouble to get her pose correctly, and often proportions were good but I lost them trying to correct the pose

De la dernière étape, soit en juin 2006, tout alla relativement bien, relativement dans le sens que j’éprouvais encore énormément de difficultés suite aux diverses expérimentations de médiums, aussi j’avais décidé de terminer ce tableau à l’huile, en utilisant du Liquin, en plus il y avait de long délais, et comme entre chaque session d’environ 7 ou 8 heures sur 2 ou 3 jours, il pouvait s’écouler plusieurs semaines, et comme le ménage n’est pas pour moi une tâche quotidienne….le moins que je puisse dire, et probablement dû au fait que la surface de la toile était devenu particulièrement collante, inutile de dire que tout se compliquait avec la poussière…

Environ 2 ans plus tard en août 2008…toujour plus près du but, mais la progression n’était pas aussi rapide que je l’avais espéré…

On top of that, I was having quite a lot of difficulties getting the pose right, it seems to me that either I had the proportions right but not the pose, then trying to correct that I was losing the proportions, my drawing skills were not that good, or it was just out of my reach at that point to control that. And besides at that period I was quite a good, too good drinker, so often I was having few, and more than often many beers, in the first stage, you feel your movement are flying, and often I though I had a breakthrough, that it was very good…that is until I look at it the next morning…I guess my gesture was a bit too free at the end of night, so more than often I had to correct and repaint….

En plus il y avait une certaine difficulté avec la pose, que je ne parvenais jamais à saisir tout-à-fait à mon goût, de plus à cette époque, admettons que mon dessin n’était pas toujours, selon moi rarement adéquat et en plus,  je consommais beaucoup d’alcool, ce qui au début rend le geste beaucoup plus libre, sauf que souvent le lendemain je devais défaire ce que j’avais fait en fin de soirée..où mon geste était rendu beaucoup trop libre…:) et ce qui me semblait magnifique avant d’aller au lit, le matin venu me semblait plutôt horrible…

Un autre deux ans s’écoula, et là à l’approche d’une exposition chez moi, je décidais que c’était ok comme cela…donc septembre 2010, je la signe, une première fois….:) évidemment vous savez déjà qu’il y a une suite….
Another two years went by, and I was rapidly approaching the date of an exhibition I was planning at home, so I decided it was ok, and I signed it, a first time, its was September 2010…:) of course you already know it wasn’t over yet….

Lonneke – part II – The early years…

As it is the case for many of my paintings, it started as an acrylic painting, each time telling that I will master this medium, nothing wrong with this, and over the years I did start feeling more and more confortable with this medium; but at that time I had some sort of misconception about acrylic, I though that since it is drying fast, I could easily repair mistakes, drawing mistakes, so I was favorising a quick start, and not paying too much attention at the fact that everything was in the right place, but when you do like painting bodies like I do, it is for the least a recipe for disaster….:)

Comme c’est le cas pour plusieurs de mes tableaux, je les ai commencé à l’acrylique, à chaque fois je me disais que je vais apprendre à maîtriser ce médium, rien de mal là-dedans et au cours des années, j’ai appris à me sentir de plus en plus confortable avec ce medium, ce qui est moins bon par contre, c’est de se dire que comme l’acrylique sèche rapidement et se corrige facilement, je favorisais à cette époque là, un début échevelé, sans faire trop attention au dessin, lorsqu’on aime dessiner des corps, c’est pour le moins téméraire de penser ainsi et je ne pense plus la même chose…:)

J’ai commencé ce tableau le 12 juillet 2003, cette photo est datée du 5 juillet 2005, deux ans plus tard, les photos du début? Parfois on fait des erreurs de dessin, de composition, cette fois ci, un manque de rigueur informatique…I started this painting on July 12, 2003 and this picture was taken on July 5…2005, usually I took many pictures to record the steps, I did….but did not do back ups….

…and computer did crash, so I lost all the early pics…sometimes we do mistakes, drawing mistakes, composition mistakes, or too many changes, and on top of that safe data keeping practice not good, actuallly I had none…now I do take many more precautions…:)

….toujours faire des copies de ses fichiers…très utile en cas de ‘crash’ majeur….en plus sans compter que de session en session la composition du tableau changeait, des reflet du modèle qui apparaissaient et disparaissaient au gré des sessions, maintenant je m’en tiens plus à une idée de départ et j’essaie de garder le cap….

And then more steps, sideway, backtracking, adding things, removing things, parts of her body were painted here and there, taken off here and there, so a lot of repainting, which is not a good thing to keep a painting sponataneous, clean….to say the least, and during those years, my drawings skills were, well not so good, today they are better but still need improvment…they always will need.

Et par la suite quelques méandres de composition, encore des parties qui apparaissent, disparaissent, ce qui évidement implique à chaque fois beaucoup de retouches et une certaine perte de spontanéité, pour le moins….et dans ce temps là, mon dessin n’était pas à la hauteur, aujourd’hui? sais pas quel hauteur ils devront atteindre mais ils en sont plus près…:)

A bit upset, with my composition and drawing skills, and the way I tough working with acrylic were hindering my work, I decided to move to oil, usually it does not cause any or very few problems, this time it wasn’t the case, maybe partly because I tried a new medium, Liquin, I don’t know, but the canvas became very sticky, the brushes would not flow easily and I was getting more upset with this painting, so I decided to simplify it, so out of the way went the background, less distracting, less is better they say…..and well, it was hard but it seems to me that it was getting better…the only thing left was to bring back her face, some contrast, details in her skirt and boots….

Non content de la composition et des erreurs de dessin que je traînais depuis le début, pourquoi ne pas ajouter à la difficulté non seulement en passant à l’huile, mais en essayant des médiums à l’huile que je ne connaissais pas, comme le Liquin, probablement qui donne de très bon résultats pour des artistes-peintres que je connais, mais dans mon cas et de ce tableau ci, la surface du tableau devint extrêmement difficile à travailler, en devenant rugueuse et collante, ce qui bien sûr ajoutait à ma frustration grandissante avec ce tableau….et en plus de décider que tout l’arrière-plan constituait une distraction qui nuisait à l’ensemble du tableau, des heures de plaisir….normalement peindre par dessus l’acrylique ne pose aucun ou peu de problèmes, là, ce ne fût pas le cas.

Après 4 ans, environ 60 heures de peinture, je croyais enfin approcher du moment où je pourrais signer ce tableau…parfois on a des pensées un peu folles…:)

Lonneke – a long, very long painting part I

I keeping dusting off the long list of works finished and still hanging around in the ‘in progress’ sections of my various sites, bu the way some of these sites will be probably left there, have to do some clean up in this area as well, taking too much time to maintain…

So let’s talk about a painting who’s been my lomguest endeavour, model Lonneke Engel, sometimes there was one of her, sometimes 2, 3 or 4, and this painting could summarise everything good as well as don’t do…of my way of painting….

On continue le ménage des toiles terminées et qui sont encore dans les sections en cours de mes divers sites, certains sites en passant risquent de rester au point où ils sont…cela aussi je dois faire le ménage.
Donc c’est au tour du talbeau de Lonneke Engel, enfin des deux, trois ou quatre Lonneke selon l’époque de ce tableau, qui en a vu de toutes les couleurs..Un peu d’histoire de ce tableau un peu spécial, qui représente un condensé de plusieurs bonnes choses, et de beaucoup moins bonnes, si je voulais écrire un recueil de ce que l’on doit faire et éviter en peinture, je devrais m’en inspirer….

The final version of this painting started in 2003 and finished in 2013….10 years, just about the same timelap between the moment President Kennedy promised that americans would land on the moon before the end of the sixties….

La version finale de ce tableau commencé en 2003 et terminé en 2013…10 ans, à peu près le même temps qui s’est écoulé entre le discours du président Kennedy qui promettait que des américains se poseraient sur la Lune avant la fin des années 60…:)

Le film suivra dans un prochain article, en fait probablement 2 ou 3 films, il y a eu tellement de changements de direction dans ce tableau, et de plus, je ne peux télécharger sur Flickr des vidéo de plus de 3 minutes, alors si je veux obtenir une transition en douceur entre les diapositives je dois allonger l’intervalle entre 2 diapos….et aussi un peu d’histoire sur les étapes, bonnes et moins bonnes de ce tableau…

The making of video will follow in a next post, maybe 2 ou 3 video, there’s been so many changes in this painting, and on top of that I can’t load on Flickr movie longer than 3 minutes, so If I want to keep a smooth transition between slides, it will be better to present it by sections…and also a bit of history, of good things and should not have done that……

Between Lonneke and clean-up tasks….

Still preparing that exhibition, not yet started hanging the new works, still in clean up mode, but to end this day well, why not painting a little bit, like the 3 Lonneke painting, that still not quite finished, I think it is pretty close to be now, I do work in an engineering related job, maybe I should just do what they do with the drawing draft versions, sometimes the are emitted with the mention DRAFT, at either 30, 60 or 90 %, so I think it will be showned, finished or not, I will say it is a draft version at 99%, but I will omit the DRAFT VERSION mention on the canvas.

Toujours en préparation pour l’expo, pas encore commencé l’accrochage, bientôt…en attendant pour terminer la soirée, un peu de peinture, il y a toujours ce tableau des Lonneke que je voudrais bien terminer, il est bien près, peut-être changera-t-il encore un peu, sais pas. Dans mon milieu de travail, l’ingénierie, on émet souvent des documents préliminaires soit à 30, 60 ou 95 %, autrement presque terminé, peut-être devrais exposer ce tableau, en disant qu’il est 99 % fini, surtout que je sais bien que pour plusieurs, il est bel et bien fini…mais je n’étamperai pas un gros PRÉLIMINAIRE  sur le tableau, comme on fait sur les plans émis préliminaires….:D

Thursday morning, and many parts of my body remind me that I’m not use to extensive clean-up and moving duties…so to start slowly and warm up…why not trying to finish this painting, which now is probably more than 99%, in fact it is finish, but of course, I would not be surprised if the first visitors at my show, will caught me adding a thing here and there on this painting..:)

No pics of the place, bared washed walls, look quite the same as bared unwashed walls….should start today hanging the new works, and liberating some spaces to work on the rest of the place…E day minus 52 hours…stressing out a bit…:D

Jeudi matin, je ressens les efforts de déménager des meubles et piles de toutes choses…mal un peu partout, donc avant de s’y remettre, un peu de peinture…nouvelle version du tableau, qui là est vraiment à 99%, sinon 100%…il y a de forte probabilités que les premiers visiteurs à l’expo, me surprennent en train de le modifier encore une fois…:)

Pas de photos de la préparation, des murs lavés vides sur photo ressemble beaucoup à des murs non lavés…devrais commencer l’accrochage bientôt et ainsi libérer un peu d’espace pour s’occuper du reste du logement….Jour E -52 heures…:)

Oh, they give me a lot of….

Lot of trouble these three Lonneke..another session when it seems that this particular painting, goes on his way, going in a way that I did not planned….and when this happen, some good and bad things happen, I do like the more loose side it took, even if in the meantime, it send my model almost faceless….at least tonight, which by the way is Tuesday, I took a photo, but did not feel like posting it right away, I know I will reworked it soon, like tomorrow night….

Du trouble, ah ce qu’elles m’en donnent ces Lonneke…..encore une séance où ce tableau fait un détour plus ou moins long….j’étais parti bien tranquillement, et voilà comme cela arrive parfois, mais assez souvent avec ce tableau, je me mets à travailler avec plus d’élan, en ne prenant pas trop garde à ce qui arrivera, donc à ce point, mardi soir, pour être plus précis, elles ont toutes perdues ou gagnées quelque chose, perdues leurs visage, mais trouvé plus de contraste, et encore une fois ce tableau semble avoir son propre chemin, et comme je ne le retiens pas, je suis où il va….j’ai pris une photo, mais j’ai décidé d’attendre avant d’afficher cet article, quelque chose me dit que je vais le retravailler bientôt ce tableau, comme demain soir par exemple..

In repair mode, for the face or faces shall I say…and why not working on the background, either by rendering it a bit more uniform, and playing with colors, shapes and contrast, and trying to fix the light, which is quite unnatural….in fact it is coming from many sides…I guess this is a difficulty that come with this type of painting, made from a collection of part of the same pose..

Maintenant en mode rattrapage, et aussi tant qu’à y être pourquoi pas modifié l’arrière-plan tout en essayant de ramener le ou les visages, travailler la lumière, qui est pas évidente….faut bien le dire….en fait il y en a partout, une difficulté que j’ai souvent lorsque je commence à reproduire des parties de la pose un peu partout, tout en essayant de garder une composition intéressante, pas évident…

Still a bit, a lot of work, on this painting, which I think is finally very close to the end….I feel it or just telling myself the expo is near and I want to show it…and another leg is appearing, or reappearing I should say, often I do apply a rule I’ve been teached in my very first painting course, repeating either a color, a shape, a texture in at least 3 place, spread across the painting, apparently it does help balancing, and the eye is moving from one of these spots to another…so here I do have 3 times Lonneke and three times one of her boot….I guess the magic number here is 3, rule are fine, but I’m not always respecting them, you have to know them before deciding te break it, but it is not the case here…:)

Encore un peu de travail sur ce tableau, qui approche de la fin, je le sens…et une autre jambe qui apparaît ou revient à vrai dire…, souvent j’applique une règle que j’ai gardé de mon tout premier cours de peinture…répéter à quelques endroits, une forme, une couleur, et voilà trois fois Lonneke et trois fois une de ses bottes, et quelques autres couleurs et formes qui reviennent ici et là, le chiffre magique dans ce cas ci est 3…:), je ne respecte pas toujours toutes ces règles apprises dans ces cours, mais pour les contourner à l’occasion, faut les connaître…mais dans ce cas-ci, je les ai respecté ces règles…:)

Nothing like…

Nothing like having a deadline, even self-imposed, like putting a date for a home exhibition, to finish some works that were due, maybe it won’t be finished tonight, but very little will be missing….

Rien comme de se fixer un échéancier, comme une date d’exposition, pour se mettre en mode ‘Terminator’,de tableaux va s’en dire…en bonne voie d’en terminer un autre ce soir, peut-être pas  ce soir, mais s’il n’est pas terminé, il manquera bien peu de choses…
This painting of a woman, wearing boots, how unusual…:) and who’s picking up or putting down her suitcase, still don’t know about that…not important I guess…

Le tableau de ce modèle, aux bottes blanches, on s’y attend qu’il y ait des bottes…:) et qui prend ou dépose sa valise, je ne le sais toujours pas…

Comme il reste tout-de-même bien peu de temps avant cette expo, j’aimerais finir ces deux autres interminables toiles, Lonneke Engel et ses doubles ou triples en fait, et Sophie Marceau, il y a bien longtemps qu’ils durent ces tableaux…et j’aimerais bien les présenter….allez au travail!

Since there is not so much time left before the exhibition, I would like to finish those two unfinishable paintings…Lonneke, actually more like three times her and also Sophie Marceau, been so long I started those two, I would like very much have them ready for the exhibit….get to work!

The end of the world and Lonneke…

I was hoping that the end of the world predicted by the Mayas, would give me a good excuse, to leave this unterminable painting unfinished, well seems I do have to revise my plans, and since were in a new year, maybe I shall take the same resolution of last year…learn to draw hands, and ears….as for feets….I do have a way to go around that, I think I can draw and paint boots pretty well…:) So the latest versions of Lonneke, more like the 3 Lonnekes…

Je comptais bien sur les Mayas et la fin du monde pour me donner une raison de laisser ce tableau interminable, non complété….semble que je devrai réviser mes plans et essayer de le finir ce tableau, et tant qu’à faire je reprends la même résolution qu’en 2012…essayer d’apprendre à dessiner des mains, et des oreilles…toujours difficiles….Quant aux pieds, je dessine assez bien les bottes, ce qui permet de contourner le problème, donc voici les dernières versions de Lonneke, en fait plutôt 3 fois qu’une…

Still with Lonneke and a bit more of linseed oil….

Still working on this painting, as I mentionned, I modified the proportion of linseed oil in my medium, the paint is more ‘flowing’, and I think the result can be seen, so here’s the last two photos, one yesterday, the other tonight…

Oui continué ce tableau, comme je le mentionnais, j’ai modifié quelque peu, beaucoup, la proportion d’huile de lin dans mon mélange de médium, ce qui rend la peinture plus fluide, et je crois que l’effet paraît sur ces nouvelles versions…voilà les photos d’hier et ce soir.
