Mould Bay…là où la baie ne dégèle jamais…the bay that never thawed…

Hier je publiais un article sur Resolute Bay, je mentionnais que ces photos datent de 1983-1985 et qu’à ce moment là on ne parlait pas de réchauffement climatique, en retrouvant cette photo de Mould Bay, une anecdote m’est revenu….

Yesterday I started going through old slides, the one posted were from Resolute Bay, they were taken between 1983 and 1985 and I wrote that then global warming wasn’t the day conversation subject…then this morning I came across this one taken in Mould Bay, and some thing did come back to my mind…

It was March 1984, and a research project was going here, the idea was to study multi-year old ice and relate the ground data to images taken from space, so it would be possible to have more detailed maps of ice condition in Arctic waters. Mould Bay was selected because the Bay would never completely melt in summer…except for 1983, than 1984 and 1985, I did not return after that but I guess it was probably the last time it could be studied, so I guess it was a first sign….

Mars 1984 à Mould Bay, cet endroit avait été choisi par le gouvernement canadien afin d’étudier la glace multi-années, à cet endroit la glace persistait même durant le court été arctique, le but étant de relier ces données au sol aux images provenant des satellites, le but étant de mieux cartographier l’état des glaces dans l’Arctique.

Sauf qu’en 1983, puis de même en 1984 et 1985, le couvert de glace a complètement disparu au cours de l’été, ce qui embêtait bien les chercheurs qui comptaient compiler ces données. Je n’y suis jamais retourné mais je présume qu’il en a été ainsi durant les années suivantes, donc peut-être qu’on en parlait pas encore, mais semble que les premiers signaux étaient là.

Et je n’aime pas la chaleur et l’humidité, probablement pour cela que je me suis plongé dans de vieilles photos (1983) du temps où je montais dans les Iles arctiques, Mould Bay et Eureka, entre autres….

I don’t like hot and humid…probably why I was looking through my pic’s collection of a time when I used to go to work up North, very far North, up in the Arctic Islands, place like Mould Bay and Eureka

There was always some odd features on these stations, some funny references, or things that are a bit out of place like a strange looking mast, maybe it did have a purpose in teh first years, but not when I was there, at least it did provide for a contrejour shot, underexposed to add drama… or the buildings wearing indications for the International Mould Bay airport…gates 1 to 77…:)

La plupart du temps il y a des choses un peu loufoques, comme ici les bâtiments abritant l’aéroport International de Mould Bay, barrières 1 à 77, toujours embarquer à la barrière 1…:)

ou un mât qui a peut-être servi à quelque chose au début, mais lorsque j’y étais, il n’a servi qu’à faire un cliché en contre jour, volontairement sous-exposé, c’était déjà la période de jour continu 24 sur 24 mais froid….-30 au lieu des 30 que l’on connaît ces jours-ci à Montréal…

Et bien sûr j’ai encore plein de diapos numérisés de ces stations, elles demandent du travail de maquillage, trop de poussières…donc de temps en temps j’en sors une ou deux de la poussière….

As for many others sites, I have lots of pics, but these do demand more work, these are slides and they have collected lot of dust, so I do have to clean them…should do the same with my appartment….

What is that spot…Quelle est cette tache…

Une photo retravaillée plus que d’habitude dans photoshop, j’ai même redessiné une partie de l’image numérisée, il y avait une tache, brillante, rectangulaire et bizarre, probablement un ‘glitch’ de mon numériseur, je ne sais pas, donc la photo, retravaillée, Mould Bay, Nunavut, en juillet 1984…

A photo, scanned, that did required lot of work in photoshop, the was a big rectangular bright spot that was there, probably a glitch from the scanner, since I don’t remember anything that should be there, on this spot, so a modified picture taken in July 1984 , in Mould Bay, Northwest Territories then, Nunavut today.

And then it came back to me, this wasn’t an error, but a temporary shelter, we were putting some rubber sheating to protect the roof, and it has to be warm, hot, and that summer it was cold, so we had built this from plywood sheating to protect the burner from the ever present wind…so it was there, now looking at it I think I overdid it in Photoshop…maybe I should try something to fix it, if I do…you will know…

Et après je me suis rappelé que non ce n’était pas une bizarrerie du numériseur mais plutôt un abri en contre-plaqué qu’on avait construit, cet été-là on devait refaire le revêtement du toit du petit bâtiment, et il fallait que les lanières de caoutchouc soit encollées, et la colle devait être bien chaude, et il faisait froid cet été là, et c’était tout le temps bien venteux, donc on avait fait cet abri temporaire, donc pas une erreur de numérisation…seulement ma mémoire défectueuse, temporairement…aussi je me suis rendu compte que j’ai trop forcé la note dans mes manipulations en photoshop, certains aspects j’aime, d’autres beaucoup moins…je vais probablement essayer quelque chose, si je le fais et que le résultat est satisfaisant, il y aura sûrement un autre article sur cela..

A very long night…

Early in March,, 1984, the sun has begun his coming back on this frozen land, the Canadian Arctic, for a few weeks now, it does come a bit more day by day, a few minutes at first and within 6 weeks, we pass from 24 hours darkness to 24 hours daylight, I never experienced a whole winter there, it is 4 months of complete darkness and deep freeze weather, though on the body, and the mind; but now spring is in the air, frigid air, -30, but at least a more luminous -30….

Début mars, 1984, Mould Bay, depuis quelques jours le soleil revient sur l’arctique, bien timidement et brièvement chaque jour, par contre en un peu plus de 4 semaines, il fera jour 24 heures sur 24, je n’ai jamais passé un hiver complet sans lumière, près de quatre mois à ces latitudes, mais c’est bien difficile pour le corps et l’esprit de subir cette longue absence, mais là enfin le printemps..hum à -30, c’est un printemps glacial, mais plus lumineux….

What is the relation between this photo of an husky dog and the title you may ask yourself, if you saw and remember a previous post you know, the link to this post, in short this dog was the ancient leader of the pack, his partner died, and he was sort of cast away by the rest of the pack, so it was always following us, maybe he wanted to be with us, or looking for our protection or simply staying as far as possible from the others dogs who were mean to him. I like this pic, I found it beautiful even if the situation wasn’t… You may also wonder what is this funny stuff on the wall, it is an insulation material sprayed on the building, polyurethane foam, normally it is a pale yellow, but when left exposed without covering material, the sun made it turn to a dark orange color.

Le rapport entre le titre et la photo de ce magnifique chien Husky…j’en avais déjà parlé dans un article précédent, le lien vers cet article, une autre photo, de l’ancien leader de la bande de chiens qui était à la station de Mould Bay. Il semble triste, craintif, comme je le mentionnais il se collait constamment à nous, sais pas s’il recherchait notre compagnie, protection ou tout simplement fuyait les autres membres de la bande, la photo est tout-de-même belle, du moins je le crois, malgré que la situation était beaucoup moins belle. La substance orange, un peu étrange, peut-être que certains se posent la question, c’est quoi cela, c’est un matériau isolant, de la mousse polystyrène qui est giclé sur les murs, normalement elle est jaune pâle ou beige, par contre sous l’effet de la lumière, lorsqu’elle reste longtemps exposé sans recouvrement elle devient très orangée.

Winter is slowing showing is foregard here, maybe that’s why I feel like putting one more pic from Mould Bay, it was still summer there, but that year summer up there felt more like late fall here….

On sent venir les premières journées fraîches, presque froide, peut-être cela qui me ramène à l’été à Mould Bay, qui souvent ressemblait plus à un temps bien automnal…
